September 11 Newsletter

I hope you are fit and well and enjoying the summer.

Not a lot to report this month, but a couple of things I thought you would find interesting.

Is your computer running too slowly?

sick computer2

In 9 out of 10 cases I came across, the answer is usually Yes. In many cases a good service and tune up will normally make a difference to the performance. I can do this for you.

However, sometimes it needs a major overhaul to restore it to its former performance.

Recently, I have seen customers who have Windows Vista installed, which is particularly troublesome. In many cases, a Vista computer takes ages to start up and then is very slow in opening programmes and multi tasking.

Many of my customers have actually bought a whole new computer with Windows 7 as their Vista computer was so bad

There is a solution, which will always work 100% of the time.

The answer is to perform a full factory restore, to return the computer to its original state when brand new.

This involves backing up all the files and data stored on the computer. Then doing a full Restore. Then to reinstall any programmes, files, documents, emails etc.

It’s quite a long job but is guaranteed to improve the speed and performance of the PC.

I have just done this on my own Toshiba laptop at home, which was running so badly. It’s now absolutely flying, and is like brand new again.

So if you have a slow Vista (or even Windows7) computer which is running badly, then a full factory restore is probably the answer.

If that’s of interest to you, let me know.

Software for Students

Microsoft Office 2010 is a fantastic suite of programmes. However many people have the basic version installed, which gives you Word, Excel & PowerPoint. In most cases, this is more than sufficient. New Windows 7 computers have a starter version of Word & Excel, which has many limitations, and no PowerPoint.

However Microsoft Professional has many other popular programmes, such as Outlook & Publisher, which if you bought these individually, cost about £100 each.

The cost from Amazon for Office Professional is currently £331.00 for a single licence.

However, if you have a student in your family, you are eligible to buy the same product for just £37.89 for 2 licences, therefore just £19 per computer. Unbelievable value.

There is a site called Software for Students which sells legal, full featured software, to all school, college and university students and their families.

Click on the link below for further details:

So if you have an eligible student in your family and would like to have the top of the range Microsoft Office software, then this is the ideal product for you. If you need any further help or advice let me know.

Scam Alert.

scam_alertOne of my customers this week fell for a scam over the phone. She received a call from someone from “Microsoft”, saying they had detected that her computer has been infected and was sending out spam emails. They said they need to make her computer secure. They convinced her to part with $60 and then took over control of her computer.

After that her computer was running really badly and I needed to go and investigate and fix the problem.

So that call resulted in 3 things. Firstly, they gave themselves the ability to access her computer at will. Secondly they took $60 of her money. Thirdly, they now have her credit card details.

Microsoft is NEVER EVER going to phone you to say they have detected a problem. It is ALWAYS going to be a scam to try and convince you to part with money. Please do not fall for it.

And finally...

I’m in love!!! I’ve been watching a new magician on TV recently, called Dynamo. He’s a young guy from Bradford who is just breathtaking. He’s just had a series on TV called Magician Impossible where he performed stunts that just blow your mind. There are many clips on him on Youtube which I would urge you to watch, if you have an interest in magic and illusion.

Click below to see a clip from Sky’s Soccer AM, but when you have watched that, just watch some of the other clips. It will totally mess your brain up!. If you get a chance to see the repeats on the Watch Channel on TV, please do it.

That’s it for now. If I can be of any help or if you need advice, please let me know.
