Newsletter Dec 2013
We’ve reached
the end of the year and I hope you are keeping fit and well. Here’s the last
newsletter of the year Still problems with Yahoo
However a bigger
problem is their new look webmail, which has caused a major problem inasmuch as
many of my customers find they cannot open some or all attachments they receive.
I thought initially it was just an isolated case with one particular customer,
but it now happening to anyone who uses Yahoo Mail on the web. When you receive
an attachment and click on it, nothing happens. Brilliant. Fortunately,
there IS a solution. By going into the
Settings controls, you can revert to the Basic version (rather than the Full
version) which does allow attachments to be opened and saved. A better solution
is NOT to use Yahoo Mail on the web. I encourage my customers to use a separate
email programme such as Windows Live Mail or Microsoft Outlook to bring in their
emails. This is my favoured way, and makes it much more user friendly,
particularly when sending or receiving attachments. Of course if you
need any help in switching over, I’m happy to help. NEW FEATURE
Gadget of the Month.

First introduced
in 2001, Windows XP support by Microsoft is coming to an end in April 2014. XP
was the successor to Windows 2000 and ME, and was hailed as a totally new
experience for home and business PC users. And even now, after 13 years of loyal
service, XP is still regarded by many, as the best and most efficient operating
system. Also, Microsoft
has announced that support for Office 2003 will also cease after April. So what does this
mean for XP users? I believe that if you still have an XP computer or laptop,
and it’s still working well, then continue using it as normal. However, as
there will no more security updates after April, potentially your PC could be
vulnerable to being hacked into and your data being viewed or deleted by anyone
who could access your computer. However, if you didn’t use it online (i.e. not
using email or internet), there’s no reason to be alarmed. But in reality,
the majority of XP users should now seriously consider upgrading to a new
computer or laptop.
The cost of a
brand new Windows 8 computer is now as low as £350 upwards, and the difference
in performance is quite dramatic, compared to XP. Technology has
moved on greatly in the last few years. So, if you are
thinking of upgrading your system and would like any advice or help transferring
everything over, please call or email me, and I’d be happy to steer you in the
right direction. NEW FEATURE App
of the month.
Snapchat
How many companies do you know that have
never made a penny profit, and have just turned down an offer of $4 Billion to
be taken over by Google? Yes I repeat 4 Billion Dollars! There is only 1 – and Snapchat is its
name. Snapchat is an amazing service for Apple
& Android users on their phones and tablets. Simply put, it allows you to take a photo or
short video, add text or doodles, and send it to your friends’ devices. The
catch is, the photo or video is only available to be viewed for a maximum of 10
seconds only. Then it is gone forever. So it’s really a snapshot which you can
send to the friends you choose only (unlike Facebook which shows it to the world
forever) and is then gone forever after a few seconds. My kids are convinced I’m far too old to
be using Snapchat, but you can download it from the Apple App Store or Android
Play Store for free. (Unless of course like me you’re far too old to be using
it!) And Finally…..
For this festive season, I thought you may
like to see again the video of the Flash Mob which performed at Brent Cross
Shopping Centre, singing the Hallelujah Chorus, to the surprise and delight of
the Christmas shoppers. Turn up the volume and enjoy the next 6 minutes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bR8z6NYmdXI
I’d just like to thank all of my lovely
customers for your continued support through the last year, and I look forward
to being of service to you in 2014. I wish you and your family a very happy,
healthy and safe New Year, and please remember that I’m always here if you
need any help or advice. |
