July/Aug 2011 Newsletter

I hope you are fit and well and enjoying the sunshine.

Here’s a roundup of the latest news, but not much to report this month.

Backups

I make no apologies for nagging you again about backing up your computer, as I am now getting AT LEAST one customer per month, whose computer suddenly dies and all documents, pictures etc are lost forever. More often than not, they have not taken a recent backup, so all their valuable data is gone.

I can’t trust the majority of my customers to do regular backups, so I recommend two ways of ensuring that should disaster strike, all your files are safe and recoverable.

I use a WD Passport external hard drive, which is available through Amazon and most computer supply stores for around £50.00 which is cheap insurance. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Passport-Essential-Midnight-Black-Portable/dp/B004445JHC/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1307692422&sr=1-1

What I love about it is that is does a continuous, automatic backup of your files, you simply install it, run the programme, and from then on, any new document, picture, email etc are automatically saved onto the Passport. Then should disaster strike out of the blue, all your valuable files are easy restored.

The other method is by using online backup services. The most popular is Mozy (www.mozy.com) which allows you up to 2Gb of free storage space. But as most people have much more than 2Gb, they offer a monthly subscription service to give you unlimited storage space. Mozy does an automatic backup of the files and folders you choose, and saves them online in ‘The Cloud’, which is safe and secure

Whichever method you choose, even if you still use memory sticks or CDs or DVDs to do your backups, please do it. Prevention is better than cure.

I would be happy to help you if you need assistance. Just call or email me.

Roboform

Are you fed up with having to remember loads of different passwords for different websites, or having to complete online forms which ask for your name, address, email and phone number etc?

Help is at hand. I’ve been using a fantastic programme called Roboform, which does all the hard work for you.

It allows you to store all your details (as much or as little as you choose), so that when you’re asked for your name, email address etc, all you need to do is click one button on the Roboform toolbar on your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) and it automatically fills in all your details for you.

The free version allows you to store your details on up to 10 different websites. If you need more than 10 passwords stored, then you can upgrade to the paid for pro version which gives you unlimited passwords. (I’ve got this version).

You are welcome to install it yourself (Just type ‘Roboform’ into Google and follow the link from Download.com), but if you’re not confident to do it, I would be happy to come over and do it all for you and show you how it works.

Twitter

I have recently been using Twitter, to see what all the fuss is about. I first became interested again after the recent debate about Super Injunctions.

It is really clever. If you don’t know what it is, then let me give you the highlights:

Basically, Twitter is a message board where anyone can open a free account to view or send messages to the twitter community. You can post a comment using a maximum of 140 characters. But the beauty of it is that you can ‘Follow’ anyone to see their ‘Tweets’ (messages). You don’t need to wait for them to accept you as a friend, as you do with Facebook. Anyone can follow anyone. I follow various people, such as Alan Sugar, Piers Morgan, Richard Branson (he’s always in a pickle!) as well as some of my favourite TV shows to get the latest gossip. I don’t often post my own Tweets, although if I get inspired, I would. If you haven’t looked at Twitter, I would suggest you do. Simply go to www.twitter.com and do a search for me or anyone else.

Online Casinos

Do you like a flutter? Do you ever go to the casino? Well there are many online casinos, most of which allow you to play for free.

I’ve been using probably the biggest online casino www.888.com which I have to admit, I’ve become a bit addicted to. I don’t play for real money, just against the computer, but its really quite fun.

Personally, I love playing roulette. I currently have around £17,000 in the virtual bank!! (not real money) and I am so tempted to put in my credit card and play for real, but I know what would happen!! They also offer all the games you would expect to see at a regular casino, such as Blackjack, Poker, Slot Machines etc.

So if you want to kill some time playing at the computer, I can highly recommend 888.com. Just be careful. If you decide to play for real money, and lose your life savings and house, please don’t blame me!!

Spring Clean

When was the last time your computer was serviced? Is it running slower than it used to? Is your security protection up to date and working properly?

Like a car, computers and laptops do require maintenance regularly and an annual service, to ensure it is working to its maximum ability.

If you would like to treat your computer to a full Tune Up, I can give it a full service and security check up to make sure you’re getting the best performance out of it. The cost of this is just £50, and usually takes around an hour, and you’ll find your computer is running better than ever.

You should find that your computer runs better than it has done for ages, and you will be fully protected against all the nasties that are out there, trying to get in.

And Finally……

I always like to try to amuse or educate you at the end of my newsletter.

Thanks to my daughter Kelly for showing me this video. Even if you don’t know the songs, I think you’ll find it great fun as I did.

That’s it for now. Enjoy the summer and please call or email me if I can be of any help to you.
